Charles Soule Talks Death Of X Twist
It’s no secret that the X-Men franchise has had it rough in the comics recently. On one hand, they do have an impressive lineup of titles. However, as a whole, the mutant race has faced numerous hardships for seemingly no reason. One benefit though was the rise of Cyclops as a figurehead for this change. With the conclusion of “Death Of X” though, that statement took a whole new meaning.
SPOILERS FOR DEATH OF X AHEAD!
In the conclusion of the miniseries, it was confirmed that Scott Summers, aka Cyclops was indeed dead. However, it was revealed that he died upon contact with the Terrigen Cloud at the very beginning of the miniseries, instead of being killed by Black Bolt like we were shown in issue #4. In a chat with ComicBook.com, writer Charles Soule talked about this twist:
“It came in really early in the planning sessions. We were looking for a big idea to tie the whole series together, and that just hit really well with everyone right from the start. The idea that Emma does everything she does in the series as some sort of twisted tribute to Cyclops, trying to carry on his legacy in a way that he probably never would have endorsed… it makes this a story that’s about quite a bit more than just Inhumans and X-Men hitting each other, and that’s what ultimately makes (hopefully) worth reading. I’m really happy with it, honestly. Who knows how it will be received, but I think it’s a really interesting Emma/Scott story.”
This is of course leading to the massive Inhumans Vs. X-Men arc that kicks off next week, one that will lead to the “RessurreXion” event next year.
