Cerebrum Uploads Itself May 4
May the 4th is Star Wars Day, but it’s also the day a sci-fi flick of a different variety will be released on demand…Glasshouse Distribution’s Cerebrum.
Don’t believe those articles about how much “data” the human brain can theoretically hold — the brain stores information in a manner that’s not really comparable with solid state drives or USB sticks. Assuming the two things WERE the same, though, how long would it take for the ability to “back up” your brain data to become a thing? Apple would have likely made it a mass product in 2009, but since it can’t actually happen, we’ll have to speculate through movies like Cerebrum.
The subject of this one is a man named Tom, who agrees to be the test subject for an experimental “back up your brain” device. It seems to work at first, but then Tom finds out he was involved in a crime and he can’t remember actually committing it. Good thing he has that trusty backup…or was the backup the cause of his forgetfulness? Did it make him commit the crime before he forgot it? What’s really going on?
Cerebrum was written and directed by Arvi Ragu. “The seed for Cerebrum came from our current social behavior where all our photos, videos, shopping choices, political affiliations, financial data, and all other aspects of our daily life have been digitized,” he explains. “Besides the sci-fi aspect, I wanted to explore the broken relationship between a father and son, and how they find a common cause to come together to understand and love each other.”
The film stars Christian James (Hell Fest, “Nashville”), Alexxis Lemire (The Half of It), James Russo (Django Unchained, Beverly Hills Cop), John Ruby (“Justified”) and Anirudh Pisharody (“The Goldbergs”). Cerebrum will screen at the 54th annual WorldFest in Houston later this month, but it’ll be available for the rest of us May 4 on demand.
