Captain America: Civil War Begins Production, New Story Details Revealed
Avengers and heroes might have assembled to defeat Ultron, but soon those times of heroes uniting will end because Marvel Studios has officially announced that the principal photography has begun for Captain America: Civil War. Fresh off of the box office domination of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the cast members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have assembled in Atlanta, Georgia for the film’s production. Atlanta will serve as the base for the film’s production before moving to other locations in Germany, Puerto Rico and Iceland.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo return to helm the sequel from a script by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, the writers behind the first two Captain America movies. For the film’s cast, Chris Evans stars as Steve Rogers aka Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. is back as Tony Stark aka Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Marvel Studios has also confirmed that Paul Rudd will reprise his role as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War after starring in his own solo film, Ant-Man, due out on July 17, 2015. Captain Americ: Civil War will also see the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa aka the Black Panther.
Additional cast members for Civil War include Emily VanCamp returning as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, and Martin Freeman. The roles of Brühl and Freeman have not yet been announced. However, another big franchise return is Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Hurt has not appeared as Ross since Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk released in 2008, so it will be his first appearance as the character in eight years. Hurt’s appearance suggests there could be some connection or an appearance with Bruce Banner aka The Hulk in the film.
One thing to note is that the cast is huge. The film has to service even more characters than The Winter Soldier and arguably the last Avengers movie. Hopefully, the Russo bros. and the writers are up to the task of juggling all these plates. It is hard to see that the film can make this Captain America’s movie but deal with so many other characters and potential subplots. Here is the official plot synopsis from Marvel and Walt Disney Studios:
“Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.”
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
