*’RETRUN OF THE JOKER’ COMES EARLY TO CANADA
Hey, all you Canadian fans (like the co-editor and myself), good news! RETURN OF THE JOKER might be coming to Canada a whole two weeks earlier than its release date in the United States.An employee at the Canadian department store chain ZELLERS had this to say (on top of other reports and flyers I myself have seen in papers recently):
“I’m pretty sure ROTJ is coming out on Nov. 28. Why do I know this, well my buddy works at Zellers and he says that it’s gonna be a big release. They have it marked on the calendar and are getting all sorts of adds, cardboard cut outs and various things for the display. Zellers still might be mistaken about the release date, but from what I hear on the inside it sounds like it’s on the way.”
So yeah, don’t take this as Bible truth or anything, but keep your eyes and ears peeled. (If I recall correctly, some BATMAN RETURNS related merchandise was released in Canada prior to its release in the States back in ’92, also at Zellers. Perhaps this is true ever all…)
I’ve also seen this release date printed in magazines and flyers distrubuted at FAMOUS PLAYERS theatres across the country.
OH, FORGET WE SAID ANYTHING…these rumours have been proven…TRUE!!! As for what this holds for the American market…well, the official ROTJ site still states the release date as Dec. 12th, but I suggest you check with your local video or department store just to make sure.
And hey, since Canadian censorship laws on movies and TV are virtually non-existant, perhaps we’ll see the unedited version head north. We’ve already heard from certain sellers on eBay that they are unedited. I’ll personally keep you posted.
*THE EVER-LASTING QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER BATMAN BEYOND WILL BE CANCELLED AFTER THIS SEASON…
Yeah, it’s back again. We’re now hearing rumblings that BATMAN BEYOND will be canned after this current season (totalling 52 episodes). This has come time and time again, and lo and behold, no final answer. Either way, we can’t be too careful, so a petition has been created to give this series support and prove to those bigwigs at the WB that we want more episodes to tie up the loose ends in the previous seasons.

THE FATE OF BATMAN BEYOND ON CANADIAN TELEVISION:
My co-editor Dick Grayson e-mailed YTV last week regarding the absense of Batman Beyond from the YTV schedule. We got a response, and here’s what they had to say:
“‘Batman Beyond’ is not part of our current schedule. We are sorry if this is disappointing for you to hear. We hope you can understand that it is not uncommon for television stations to move some programs to another day or time, introduce new shows, temporarily remove programs, or cancel shows with expired contracts. It is important to remember that all schedules are subject to change without notice.
“With this said, your comments have been forwarded to our Programming Department for future consideration. Please keep in mind that although we do try to make all of our viewers happy, as a national network, it can be quite a challenging task.”
Maybe it is just gone temporarily – they are under contract to air all 52 episodes at least twice. However, if you don’t want to take any chances and encourage them to bring it back, e- mail them, Canadian viewers!
Anyhow, the original BTAS series is still airing, and it will be shown as follows:

This issue, however, with the release of RETURN OF THE JOKER coming tomorrow, I’ve decided to put in a review of the most recent Bat-movie, BATMAN & MR. FREEZE: SUB-ZERO into this issue. Enjoy!
March 17, 1998. The coldest day of the year. Unlike its June 20 counterpart of the previous year, Batman & Robin, Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero is an excellent adventure. This movie was well worth waiting for. (It was originally due out on July 15, 1997, but was stalled for about 8 months…)
The reason why this movie is always being compared to Batman & Robin is because both of the basic plots are the same: Mr. Freeze is on a quest, doing whatever it takes to revive his love, Nora.
The story begins in the frozen Arctic, taking place some time after the events of the BTAS episode Deep Freeze, on the fifteenth anniversary of the day Victor and Nora first met. Fries now lives in a glacial cave with his wife, two polar bear guardians, and an eskimo boy named Koonak. A submarine (done VERY WELL with intricate CGI work) emerges through the ice, unknowingly destroying the cave; everyone scatters, and the tube that Nora is held in falls ever and breaks.
So, the story is set with that scene. A victim of circumstance, Victor must set off on a quest to find a cure for his wife who has now been knocked out of suspended animation. This scene and the preceding “anniversary” scene are very touching, and show that Freeze is not an evil person at all – his immense love and admiration for Nora controls his life, so, in his eyes, nothing else matters. Despite his soft side, Freeze is still a very powerful and menacing adversary. Freeze kills the entire sub crew in revenge.
The other major relationship (besides Freeze and Nora) in this movie is the relationship between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. They are very involved with each other now… It’s this strong tie that motivates Robin to save Barbara from Freeze after she’s kidnapped in a night club. Why does Freeze kidnap Barbara in the first place? With Nora having less than two weeks to live, Freeze is growing desperate; an organ transplant is needed (the organ is not specified, but obviously it’s a vital organ), and there are no deceased donors…so a living one must be found. Barbara has the same rare blood type Nora has, and has approximately the same body weight, so Freeze pinpoints her as his target.
But how does Freeze know this? He’s not a medical doctor…he’s a cryogenics expert. Not the same thing. This is where the new major character to the cast is introduced. To help him out, Freeze also kidnaps his in-debt former colleague, Dr. Gregory Belson. Freeze forces him to assist him, and, in return, promises him access to a huge depository of gold (which he found in the Arctic). Belson agrees.
Batman himself is actually in this film very little – the central characters are Freeze and Barbara, who, in fact, spends about two minutes of the film in her Batgirl outfit. Even Commissioner Gordon isn’t around that much…you’d think he would be, since it’s his daughter that was kidnapped. The detective work Batman and Robin and Alfred go through to find Barbara (on an off-shore oil rig outside of Gotham) is good. That’s about all that Batman does in the film though…he aids Robin look for his girlfriend. Nothing spectacular with Batman’s role.
Other characters, such as Detective Bullock, Rene Montoya, and Summer Gleeson (in her last role to date on BTAS) make appearances, but don’t give the movie anything special. That’s not to say that the movie is bad though – far from it. The movie really has a lot of heart in it (I’m referring to Freeze for the most part), and is well written – no corny one-liners or anything.
The best part about this movie is the animation. To date, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was the best Batman animated to date. Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero’s “normal” animation is equal to that of Phantasm, and the CGI animation is just as good as the opening sequnce to Phantasm. The difference is that Sub-Zero uses the CGI technology very frequently, and, very well too, which easily makes it the best animated Batman cartoon of any sort to date. The submarine at the beginning, some of the icing effects, a car chase scene (involving Freeze Vs. Dick Grayson), and the computer-generated Batcave are all breath-taking. (Well, the car chase looks a little odd at parts, but on the whole, it’s very good.) The best CGI effects appear in any scene the Batwing does…it looks incredibly real and mixes in perfectly with the classical, normal animation in the movie…unlike the CGI effects on the animated Spiderman cartoon show. Even if the movie’s story was terrible, this movie is a must have for all Bat-fans simply because it’s pure eye candy from the beginning to end. The final fight on the exploding oil rig is the best part of the film – never before have flames looked so beautiful while deadly.
Overall, I think that Sub-Zero is a good Batman film. Not as good as Mask of the Phantasm, simply because it’s not as deep (or as long, sadly), or even as good as Batman or Batman Forever in my opinion, simply because Batman’s hardly in it. I think that you could easily see this movie to be on par with Batman Returns. The story is touching, the bittersweet ending is a real tear-jerker, the animation is incredible (they could actually challenge Disney studios with this film), the music is on par with Danny Elfman’s work, and the rest is just pure fun. The only downside is that the story isn’t very deep, Batman isn’t in the film for long, Koonak doesn’t even need to exist, and that this otherwise incredible film had to end so quickly – another 10 minutes would have been fine. Either way, for any Bat-fan, this is a must have. For just a normal movie fan, I’d still suggest renting it – for the previously listed reasons. Out of five stars, I give it ****.

THE REAL BATCOMPUTER (PART 2)
The Batcomputer has access to vast amounts of information. Every crime, every criminal, every clue is cataloged. Public and private information about people and places is also available. The Batcomputer has a rich encyclopedia of information, “just in case”. In the first episode of Batman: The Animated Series, “On Leather Wings”, Batman plays an audio recording into the Batcomputer. It effortlessly compares the sounds to every known bird to prove to Batman that he’s being lied to, and that he’s up against something new.
My project is to create a Real Batcomputer, and put all of that power on your desktop. Actually, most of the work has already been done. That’s the web.
So the challenge in building a Real Batcomputer is actually to narrow the information available to just the Batman stories. There’s no point in cataloging what a starling sounds like in the DC Universe. Instead, each Batman episode, movie and comic must be captured and organized so that they can be quickly used to compare to clues.
With historical case information, search functions within the Real Batcomputer will be able answer questions like “Which cases involved cats?” and “Which people were involved in those cases”?
By limiting the Batcomputer to animated Batman, it only needs to have detailed information on about 100 cases (episodes). Add in the comics (Batman Aventures, Batman and Robin Adventures, and Gotham Adventures) and you’ve got another 100 cases. Within those 200 or so cases, I’m going to estimate that we’ve been introduced to about 50 villains and 50 other citizens. Thus, the size of the Real Batcomputer’s database is about 300 records, for starters. As the information becomes more detailed, for example by tracking equipment used in each case, the database will grow. And every month, with luck, there will be another comic and another four new episodes.
300 records is a small number, and a large number. Small as databases go, large if you’ve got to write and key it all in yourself. Here’s where the web comes to the rescue, again.
Want to know everything about Harley Quinn? Type her name into the search engine at www.google.com and you’ll find over 7500 web matches with information about her. There are an army of experts on almost every aspect of Batman’s universe. And the amazing thing is that they’ve all voluntarily contributed their information to the web, where you can access it for free.
When I launched the Batcomputer, the profile on Harley Quinn had a few mistakes in it. No problem – within days, Phil, the webmaster at Harley Quinn’s Heaven (http://www.angelfire.com/tv/harleyquinn) happened by, spotted the mistakes and sent me an email with the corrections. I didn’t even tell him I’d posted the info in the first place!
(For the record, HQ’s Heaven is one of my favorite sites.)
The first trick to building the Batcomputer is providing a way for all of the experts to be able to easily contribute information. For this, I created a web interface to allow people to create and edit the Batcomputer’s database directly. Over time, I expect the Real Batcomputer to become an in-depth store of information because of this feature.
I’ve begun building the Real Batcomputer on my web site. It has a partial list of case files and villains (no equipment or locations at all yet). It’s crude, but maybe you can see its potential. The next article will be about building the Real Batcomputer so information can be quickly located.

With the dismissal of Summer Gleason last issue – though her body has yet to be found – we here at “No Man’s Island” are stumbling to find a suitable correspondant still trapped on the island of Gotham City. Gordon, Pennyworth, and Cobblepot all appear to be worthy candidates, but thus far we’ve been unable to contact them. Hopefully we’ll have something for you by next issue.
…A WALTZ DOWN MEMORY LANE…
A WORD FROM THE CAST-AWAYS:
LESLIE THOMPKINS: Nothing. She’s dead. A bottle washed up on the west side of Gotham River last night; a note was inside. Apparently Quinn, feeling guilty for Thompkins’ death, brought her back to the Batsquad where they would later deal with her.
SUMMER GLEASON: “AAAAAIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!”

AND WHAT’S HAPPENED SINCE:
We’ve been analyzing little drips of information that have been trickling through to us on the outside. Harley Quinn’s note about the death of Thompkins further explained what happened:
“Dear B-man,
I didn’t mean to do it! I didn’t! Mistah J did it. I didn’t wanna killer her, really! I’ve never killed anyone before, why would I start with her? She healed my puddin’! Please don’t hurt me – just go kick his chalky white ass for me and the old lady.
*SNIFFLE* :*-(
I’m leavin him for good now. Red’s tons nicer than he is, and is heaps more cuddly. Sorry B-man…I didn’t mean to.

Squiggles and snores,
HQ” Yeah. Apparently this note didn’t sit well with Batman – he gave it back to Quinn and just left with Thompkins’ body in his arms. It’s presumed that Thompkins’ long time friend, Alfred Pennyworth, is now running her makeshift clinic.
So, what does this note mean? This analyst can deduce many outcomes. Let’s look at this Supa-Freakz gang: Two-Face is leader, Scarecrow is the deputy, Harley Quinn has cut ties with her man, Poison Ivy is all but disbanded, and they all agree on wanting to kick the Joker out, because he just causes one problem after the next. Knowing the Joker, he’s likely to break out on his own, with no one to keep him in check or rat him out or whatnot.
Still no clues on what Poison Ivy is up to, and whether Harley is going to be an active participant or not. (I guess it all depends on whether Isely has a headache, hehe.)
A small little top hat washed ashore a few hours after the bottle. We immediately assumed it was one of the Mad Hatter’s hats, and grew somewhat concerned after looking at its tattered, torn, burnt, bullet-ridden shape. On the back of a “10/6” card, hidden deep inside a secret compartment in the hat, Tetch scrabbled down the following in what looked like really goopy red ink:
“To anyone that may care,
I am not pleased with this recent turn of events. Ever since Wesker and that dummy impaled on his digits permitted these freaks to join our group, things have grown pathetically AWFUL. Ed and I are feeling more and more outmuscled and TREMENDOUSLY underappreciated. We are the brains of this operation, and we’ve been reduced to the peanut gallery.
Quite frankly, Croc, Firefly, and Man-Bat frighten me. Wesker isn’t that compatible, either. Firefly can’t speak of anything without mentioning wanting to, ahem, “fry someone’s ass” (I’m making his language much cleaner here), and the fact that they find more use in the alligator bag than myself is quite hurtful.
They would NOT appreciate my attempts at using the rats in our camp to act as our servants. My bedtime stories – straight from the works of Carroll – were only booed and hissed. And they made light of – nay, downright INSULTED – my apparent “rodent-like appearance.” Who are they to talk? One’s a reptile, one’s a FLYING rat!
I swear by the Queen of Hearts, if I had more mind-control at my disposal…
Ed and I really should break out on our own. Or join the “Supa-Freakz”; apparently Two-Face is a competent leader, and hell, I’ve already worked with Scarecrow a number of times, so Ed and I would fit right in.
Speaking of which…I have a scoop. Scarface is sending Firefly out to assault the Supa-Freakz tomorrow night. Pass the word along to Gordon, Batman, whoever…there’s nothing I’d like to see more than that man’s devastating destruction.

Clearly, we can only hypothesize what this can result in…it looks like whatever happens, one of the groups will either disband or be annihilated.
Oh, let’s just hope that we’ll get some radio transmissions from the island…it’s getting only over here.

AND AFTER A FIFTH ROUND OF VOTING…
We across the river here saw the city aglow at about 2 am this morning – I mean, everywhere. Commissioner James Gordon was able to radio us with the details: “A woman I’ve never seen before came to our doorstep this evening – woke me up, scared the crap out of Bullock – fearing for her life. She claimed that some man in a metal mask was chasing her about town, but she was able to hide by blending in with her surroundings. She asked to seek refuge with us, so we let her.”
“Montoya decided to stay back to mend this woman’s frail soul – she said her name was Anne…Annie…Anita…I don’t recall. She could hardly speak. Bullock and I headed into town towards City Hall, and saw what she was talking about. City Hall was untouched, but the surrounding area was sparadically in flames. Firefly was sailing about through the morning sky and Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Two-Face were each trying to stop him. Ivy was particularly upset that Firefly had incinerated their fresh fruit rashions.”
So that’s why the city was ablaze overnight. It looks like our hunches were correct: the Lightweights sent Firefly to annihilate their arch-rivals. Gordon then told us the following: “I knew there was nothing we could do to calm these four down, so Bullock and I waited in the shadows on the sidelines – we wouldn’t have enough bullets. Two-Face had shot Firefly a number of times anyway, but nothing seemed to get through that metal suit of his. And then, all of a sudden, just as Firefly noticed us and was heading in our direction full steam, I was knocked flat on my face onto the concrete as someone ran up behind me – and he started blasting at Lynns, too. Little did I know that I just had my first face-to-face encounter with Mr. Freeze.”
“The Supa-Freakz all retreated when Freeze arrived, and then just the two of them remained, left to destroy each other. Bullock and I retreated – I think my trenchcoat got singed – and watched as Mr. Freeze cornered Firefly in an alleyway across the square and encased him entirely in a jagged chunk of ice.”
The communication cut there; fortunately we were blessed with another gift floating in the river this morning. We recieved Firefly himself, on ice (of course), with a note attached (go figure how the ink didn’t run): “Don’t worry, Freeze is with us. Signed, Batsquad” So Mr. Freeze is part of the Batsquad, eh? Very intriguing. I wonder what kind of strings Batman had to pull to do that.
Batman came down extra hard on Thorne last night while Freeze was across town. Word had relayed to the Dark Knight via the Penguin that Summer Gleason had been captured; even though she’s out of the game, Batman took it upon himself to save her. He burst into Thorne Enterprises last night, demanding Thorne to hand her over. Before he even had a chance to respond, Thorne’s shadowy muscle-man crept up behind Batman and clobbered him over the head; Batman spun around, dizzy, but through his haze he could make out that Thorne’s hired muscle was none other than Lock-Up.
A huge fight ensued – slowly making their way down to the basement of Thorne’s tower, where, after one well-placed fist on Lock-Up’s solar plexis, he busted through a padlocked door and exposed his personal dungeon where the tattered body of Summer Gleason and decaying body of slain Roland Dagget lay. Lock-Up apparently just kept going on about “his brand of order”; Batman took this opportunity of vulnerability and landed one final blow to Bolton, knocking him unconscious. Summer rose out of the shadows, promptly spat on her captor and threw a brick on his head, and allowed Batman to escort her back outside while dragging Bolton behind.
No words were exchanged between Thorne and Batman, but apparently Batman gave him such a look that Rupert should seriously consider dropping out of the game before he gets himself killed.
No official word on the Joker, Catwoman, or Ra’s Al Ghul – no one knows of their whereabouts or anything. Ditto for the Batsquad – honestly, there’s like, seven of them, and they can’t keep the city in peace? This columnist thinks that if they’re the last seven left on the island, they’re going to end up destroying each other – and that’s not going to be pretty.

1) This one is from the BEYOND episode “The Call (Pt. 1)”. They’ve done this in many episodes, but it was painfully obvious in this one. Watch the scene where Bruce is on the batcomputer, analyzing the footage of Warhawk’s death. There is a shot of Bruce’s hands on the keyboard. Although his fingers appear to be “typing,” the keys are so big and his hands are so small that he’s really hitting the same key over and over again. It’s kind of funny.

2) In the BEYOND episode “Betrayal”, Charlie “Big Time” Bigelow works for The Major, voiced by Jon Polito. In the movie “The Rocketeer”, Jon Polito played Bigelow, owner of Bigelow’s Air Circus. Quelle coincidence!

You really know how to tease an audience, don’t you?
Honestly, it’s just not fair.
You bring Ty Templeton back for one issue, and then he’s gone again?
NOOOOOO!!!!!
Though I have come to adore Scott Peterson’s work on GOTHAM ADVENTURES, especially as of late, I think it’s a common feeling among fans that Ty Templeton was the best. This was HIS title; it’s nice to get a great “leftover” treat like this. It just makes me wonder why it was held over for so long in the first place…
Anyway, the art was superb as always, as was the story. I really enjoy it when writers don’t just play the Joker for laughs and use him to demonstrate the complete and utter evil that exists in the world. His plan to simply “black out” the city didn’t sound tremendously creative, but as the story went on, I realized that this was far more than just a black-out; the chaos that ensued was incredible. And what does the Joker do? He doesn’t immediately commit robberies or anything like that – he just runs out into the street and beats people unconscious.
Ty and Terry convey the utter chaos beautifully. Everywhere Batman and Robin go, muggers and looters are running amuck, people are huddled on street corners together in fear, and so forth – it was almost like a mini-No-Man’s-Land.
It’s the little things that really make this a good issue – it’s a study of the human character. Things like when the Joker says that when something of this magnitude happens, people always leave their homes and “huddle outside…to reassure each other they’re safe and secure in the dark”. Batman’s method of calming the masses was an interesting idea, too. I don’t know – the little things like that really deepen what is already a great story.
Great issue, all around! Ty Templeton continues to impress – I just hope he can come back occasionally in the future!

I was apprehensive when buying this comic. I was apprehensive when I saw the cover.
I was apprehensive when I first heard of the story’s premise months before it came out.
I’ll state right off the bat that I’m not a big fan of the Demon. There has never been a story featuring that particular character that has impressed me, be it in the animated continuity or otherwise. This story was no exception. As is a requisite in all comics featuring Etrigan, a crazily magical creature from the netherworld is introduced, weird magical spells with which no one is familiar are performed, and a whole lot of rhyming. In other words, to me, it’s complete balderdash.
The art was alright, and the scene with the Demon running amok in Gotham was kinda cute, but on the whole, the issue was a miss. I don’t blame Bader for her writing – the Demon is a
difficult character to write for, because he’s just…not tremendously likable. At least that’s my opinion…

-The Batman Beyond movie is in the earliest stages of development, writer Paul Dini told The Continuum.
“Boaz, Alan and I are still working on story concepts,” Dini said, referring to writer/director Boaz Yakin and writer Alan Burnett. Dini and Burnett are producers of the Batman Beyond animated series.
*BATMAN: YEAR ONE (BATMAN 5) NEWS:
-The Comics2Film newsletter reports that the “Pure Batman5 Rumors website, (http://homes.acmecity.com/batman/arkham/23/) says director Darren Aronofsky may have long-term plans for Batman. While it was recently announced that Aronofsky would direct and co-write Batman: Year One, an unnamed source tells Frosteey that the director is hoping to do a trilogy of movies. The source claims that the cycle will start with Year One and end with The Dark Knight Returns. The source did not know what the second part of the series would be” This is the first we’ve heard of this rumor, however stories have circulated in the past the Aronofsky is keen on doing The Dark Knight Returns.
-Recent reports have stated that Aronofsky might not be as close to doing BATMAN 5 as we originally thought – for he and Miller are working on an adaption of RONIN as well. However now, either don’t know which will go into production first – whichever gets a script completed first is the winner, apparently.

-Ubi Soft Entertainment and Kemco are teaming to publish Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker on the PlayStation game console, Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64 in North America. The games will also be published in Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia under the name Batman of the Future: Return of The Joker. (They are all due out on November 16.)
-BATMAN: TOTAL CHAOS will be available for Game Boy by Christmas 2000. It is based on the NEW BATMAN ADVENTURES style (BTAS), and allows you to play as either Batman or Batgirl vs. Two- Face, Bane, Poison Ivy, and the Joker (among others) over 18 levels. Such instances would include problems with length, grammar, and language. If we do feel we must edit something, however, we will do our utmost to ensure that the opinion and the basic message of the submission does not change, as that is the most important part of any article, and everyone is entitled to it. And if you do submit something, please don’t just submit a basic review of an episode or a comic or something (because we have people writing for those purposes already) – write about an issue you’d like to discuss.
