Blumhouse Announces Dead By Daylight: The Movie
Dead By Daylight, as you likely know by now, is an asymmetric multiplayer survival horror game where one player assumes the identity of a horror monster and the other players become “survivors” trying to escape them. Whenever a game becomes popular enough, some movie studio head points at it and says “Easy money.” Blumhouse announced today they’re pointing at Dead By Daylight. The production company Atomic Monster (M3GAN) has been hired to shape the game into a feature.
“We know there are so many fans of Dead by Daylight out there and think it’s imperative we find someone who appreciates and loves the world as much as we do, to help us bring the game to the big screen,” Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum is quoted as saying. “We know our partners at Behaviour and Atomic Monster will help us bring the best version of this game to life.”
Adapting Dead By Daylight wouldn’t be as hard as some other video game to film adaptions….the thing itself is inspired by classic slasher movies. You just make one of those; job done. The bigger question is what Blumhouse is going to do about the gazillion licensed horror movie characters that are in the game. Adapting everything would make it the Ready Player One of slasher films, with cameos from Freddy Krueger, Sadako, Ghostface, Jigsaw, and even characters from other video games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The game most recently crossed over with Attack On Titan — good luck figuring that one out.
We think it’s most likely the licensed characters will be ignored and the Dead By Daylight movie will feature JUST the original monsters created for the game (they do exist). There is no release date yet for the film.
