We’ve been hearing the rumors for months. Sega and Paramount were working together on a Sonic movie. It wouldn’t be animated, it would be live-action with a “realistic” CG Sonic. Said CG Sonic would be designed completely differently from how he looks in the games. Jim Carrey would play Robotnik/Eggman, in his trademark manner. “Gangsta’s Paradise” would be used in the trailer.
It all sounded like a joke, but as we found out this morning, none of the rumors were incorrect.
One day Sonic races so fast that he creates a Sonic Boom which knocks out power to the entire Pacific Northwest (hey, that hits close to home). In response, the government enlists the assistance of Carrey Robotnik, who charges after Sonic with Badniks and Swatbots. Sonic and his new cop pal (played by Jason Marsden) must outrace them all! That’s all well and good, but the execution feels….a little off? Reminds us of the 1993 Mario Bros movie, to be honest.
Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog races into theaters November 8. Then get used to seeing him in memes and YouTube Poops for the rest of eternity.
Sonic The Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound—human—best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.
