The television Upfronts for the 2019-2020 season won’t be for another week or so, but some networks are getting their announcements in early. The CW just announced their first confirmed pickup: Batwoman. Gothamite Kate Kane, estranged relative of that Bruce guy, must take up the tights and cowl when the Batman mysteriously disappears. The character had a “test run” during the last crossover event; we liked what we saw.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise if you’ve been following the rumors, which stated the series has actually been secretly under production the past few months. Its series order became even more likely when Arrow announced it would be closing shop in December — Batwoman would fit into its old time slot perfectly.

Two weeks ago when The CW renewed EVERYTHING, we theorized it was also possible they could pick up all their pilots, shopaholics that they were. Thankfully they didn’t go that crazy, and picked up only half. The picks were pretty risk-averse: Nancy Drew is getting a series, and the Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene is a go (despite its central character being a complete stranger to anyone who isn’t familiar with Archie Comics).

This leaves the Jane the Virgin spinoff Jane the Novela on the discard pile, along with the proposed TV series adaption of the movie The Lost Boys. Deadline says The CW is still mulling over the remaining pilot, Glamorous, and has not made a decision.

Early rumors suggest that for the 2020-21 season, The CW has already given a 50-episode order to a Legends of Tomorrow spinoff centered around Gary’s demonic nipple.
