For years, fans have waited to a film adaptation of one of the Batman comic’s most seminal stories with The Killing Joke, which features the origin of Batman’s archnenemy, The Joker. Now, that is a reality with a new animated movie due out later this year. Yahoo! Movies premiered a new full trailer this week for the highly anticipated DC animated movie Batman: The Killing Joke. You can check out a YouTube version of the trailer in the player below.
The trailer features a lot of new footage, including a bit of the torture The Joker puts upon Commissioner Jim Gordon, along with his daughter Barbara. It looks like the film will add more of Barbara’s story into the narrative and show her as Batgirl. The Killing Joke has been criticized more lately for the story’s depiction of Barbara. It seems that this could be a way to increase her role and agency in the story, possibly to mitigate some of those critiques.
The film features the return of Kevin Conroy as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Mark Hamill as The Joker. The Killing Joke has been a story Hamill has wanted to work on for years. Batman: The Killing Joke will be Rated R. It’s due out later this summer on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD.
