Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Board Game Kickstarter Enters Final Hours
It’s the future. Batman is old and retired. But in his absence, Gotham has decayed into a crime-infested cesspool, and Bruce decides he must suit up one more time. That’s the basic plot behind The Dark Knight Returns, one of the greatest Bat-stories ever told. And in 2021 you’ll be able to live it, as Cryptozoic introduces Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Board Game. But if you want a copy, you’ll have to hurry. The Kickstarter campaign went live on January 31 and expires in less than two days.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Board Game was designed by Daryl Andrews (Sagrada) and Morgan Dontanville (Asgard’s Chosen). Here’s how the game is played: as Batman, you take on missions to beat down your old foes (as well as some new ones — and yes, you get the chance to fight Superman). Or, you can choose the “gauntlet” format where you whale against the whole rogue’s gallery in one marathon. It’s a solo experience, no Robins allowed. “Instead of traditional leveling up, this is a game of attrition,” says Cryptozoic.
The game has shattered its initial goal and earned a couple of stretch goals already: a one-on-one mode, which will let you and a friend battle one another as Batman and a villain, has been unlocked. Extra cards and two bonus figures (Commissioner Yindel and Exosuit Batman) have also been added. The next goal is an 8-page additional variable setup book, which stands a chance of being unlocked in the last wave of pledges.
The base game costs a $60 pledge. The Deluxe Edition, which includes extra content and a Kickstarter-exclusive slipcase, can be had for a $99 pledge. Retailers can pledge $325 for a shipment of six copies at a discount.
There’s not much time left, so hurry! The Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Board Game Kickstarter will only remain open until Friday, March 19 at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern.
