Warning, there will be some minor spoilers in this story for Batman Arkham Knight. During the Sony PlayStation E3 Press Conference, a new gameplay trailer was revealed for Batman Arkham Knight, which actually featured the opening cinematic sequence for the game. The opening features quite interestingly with The Joker. Don’t worry, he’s still dead, or so we think. The Joker’s diseased and dead corpse from Batman Arkham City is sent to the oven to get cremated. Then Commissioner Gordon begins a voice-over monologue. He outright says “This is the story of how Batman died.” This was one of the earlier spoiler leaks, suggesting that Batman would meet his end. However, much like in The Dark Knight Rises, it could obviously be a fake out death, but ultimately time will tell.
Gordon ominously speaks of how he knew with the death of The Joker a new war was bound to come. A police officer enters a diner. The game looks to briefly start in the first-person perspective of a GCPD police officer. He checks a smoker at a booth. The smoker is obviously a thug who works for the Scarecrow. The thug accosts the officer and gives him a dose of a new fear toxin, and all hell breaks loose.
The Joker’s cremation was previously referenced in the Batman Arkham comics, so it is a good angle to acknowledge and present in the actual game. Still, it is somewhat hard to believe this is truly it for The Joker. Death in comic books is rarely final. Batman has died on numerous occasions.
In another gameplay video, director Sefton Hill presented a slice of the gameplay. This portion showed Batman taking out one of The Penguin’s secret weapon caches. There was nothing too revealing there, but the gameplay is definitely looking good so far.
Batman Arkham Knight finally hits the shelves on June 23. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
