Avatar: The Way of Water Won’t Be A Disney+ Exclusive
Avatar: The Way of Water, the biggest blockbuster no one talks about, is confirmed to be heading to streaming very soon. Its parent company revealed you’ll be able to watch it starting June 7 on Disney+…..and HBO Max??
That’s what they said. Avatar 2 will premiere on both Disney+ and Max on the same day. To tip the scale a little on their end, Disney+ says their version will contain “bonus content featuring filmmakers, cast, and crew.”
No one is sure why this is happening — a pre-existing distribution deal between Warner Bros and 20th Century Studios (back when it had the word “Fox” in it) is the press’s best guess. Before then, Fox didn’t have a streaming channel, and had no plans to start one, so they agreed to share future content with HBO.
Avatar: The Way Of Water takes place a generation after the first movie and is about Jake Sulley raising his Navi kids in a big lagoon. It is over three hours long, quite an unreasonable theatrical ask for any human with a bladder that could be provoked by constant images of water. But with home viewing, we finally have the power to make our own intermissions. It just comes at the cost of 3D (your fault for not buying those expensive TVs ten years ago).
So if you have Max, and not Disney+, enjoy this rare bit of generosity. The movie will also be sold for rental on other competing streamers, but having it folded into the price you’re already paying for a subscription service is better.
