2011 has been a fantastic year for gaming, with developers showing that they really know how to take advantage of the PS3 and Xbox 360; dishing out games with both quality and innovation. As the year comes to a close, lots of gaming websites will begin picking their choices for the best game of the year, and while many games will be nominated, very few will actually walk away with this coveted award. Like the title says, I believe that all (well, most) of the games below are very good, and have a chance of being nominated for Game of the Year, and on some web-sites/media, may even win. My intention isn’t to belittle these games at all, but I believe that on most gaming sites these games won’t win GOTY, and here’s why.

It’s often easy to forget just how far the PS3 has come since its launch back in late 2006. Not only are there better and more games, with better graphics and more evolved gameplay; but the PS3 itself has come a long way as well. Back when I first bought my old 60 GB PS3, the PSN Store was just a web page, and functioned like the browser. The first thing I ever downloaded was the Resistance: Fall of Man demo, which took about 6 hours to download and at least 2 hours to install.

There is something special about “scary” entertainment. Whether it be a movie, a book, or a video game, there is nothing like that thrill you get from being scared. Sitting on the edge of your seat and wondering what’s around the corner, heart thumping in your ears, and unlike so many other emotions fear will linger with you long after the moment is over. Video games are still young, and using them to create fear isn’t as easy as it is for Stephen King or George Romero. The tricky part is balancing fear with gameplay, because unlike movies and books, games give a person control, which can be more immersive if used right; or it can totally break the experience. F.3.A.R, which is the third installment of the series, has had time to fine tune its scare tactics, but does it succeed in being both scary and fun to play? Hit the break for our full review.

The Silver Lining of PSN Down Time

No one can argue that these last few weeks have been hard on PS3 gamers. There is no word on exactly when the PlayStation Network will be back up, and it sucks that we can’t hop online to play with friends or download the latest games. However sooner or later the PSN will be up and running again. I believe that there are some positive aspects, or a silver lining if you will, to any bad situation. So despite this being a dark time for games, here are some good things we can take from this otherwise bad experience.

Several months ago, a director by the name of Kevin Tancharoen uploaded a proposal trailer for a Mortal Kombat movie reboot. Some didn’t like the re-imagining, but most loved it. We won’t be getting a movie, yet, but thanks to Warner Brothers and Machinima.com, Tancheroen will be making a MK web series similar to his original trailer. What is it that makes a good game trailer? To me, it’s a combination of many elements, showing off gameplay, story, characters, and a general idea of what the game is all about in a well choreographed video; with perhaps some good music playing in the background. What truly makes a game trailer successful is that it has to make you want to play the game. The following list consists of the top 20 game trailers out there. Not all the games ended up being all that great, but these trailers were what made you want to play the game in the first place. It should be noted that all trailers are for either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3.

Isaac Clarke is back, and you know what that means! Lots of stomping on inanimate objects with excessive force and grunting! Oh, and you also get to kill a lot of monsters and fly around in Zero-G. The original Dead Space is well known for giving the horror genre a much needed re-imagining by mixing scares with action, and left many gamers yearning for more.
