At Last, A Glimmer Of Hope For Alita: Battle Angel Sequel
American adaptions of Japanese properties tend to not go very well, with one exception. Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel, based on the manga series Battle Angel Alita, is the one such adaption I haven’t heard anyone say anything negative about. In fact, most people love it. The only problem is, the massive following it has today wasn’t there in 2019 when the film came out. Alita only did okay at the box office, and given how expensive it was to make, 20th Century Fox put aside all hopes for a sequel.
That was then, this is now. Producer Jon Landau told Screen Rant that he is in talks with director Rodriguez and Rosa Salazar (the actress who played Alita) for a possible follow-up. “We’re working on it,” he said, and added that for the time being, “all is good.”
Alita is the story of an amnesiac cyborg with giant eyes who wakes up one day on top of a scrap pile with no memory of how she got there, or anything else about herself. She learns how to be a fierce warrior and vows vengeance on the evil rulers of the dystopian world she inhabits. The problem is, the original film ended at about the time that vengeance was vowed — Alita never got to act on it. It’s one of the main reasons everybody wants a second movie.
There was a point in James Cameron’s career when was hung up between two passion projects: Alits: Battle Angel and Avatar. He could only devote time to one, so he picked Avatar and gave Alita to his friend Rodriguez. What would things be like if Alita: The Way Of Water was making billions at the box office right now and folks were begging 20th Century for a second “blue alien cats” movie? Makes you think.
