Arrow Full Of Hope Says Producer
There are two sides to superhero stories, it’s a well known fact. While you have heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman who are meant to be high action but inspiring, there are heroes like Batman which show you how dark things can get.
There’s a divide among fans about what kinds of stories they want with their heroes as they go out of comics and into other media. This has been shown especially for the DCTV and DCEU universes, as some praise the dark they’ve shown, while others think they’ve gone “too dark”. For the DCTV universe, the “darkness” is Arrow, which has always been the more grounded and “real” of the other series on the CW. This had led to some thinking that Arrow is devoid of the “light” that shows like Flash or Supergirl have. But longtime producer Greg Berlanti disagrees with this notion:
“In some ways, there can be some episodes of Arrow that can be just as optimistic in their own way, especially given the perils that they’re up against,” Berlanti told ComicBook.com “It’s definitely a darker-toned show in a lot of regards, but it’s always the relationships and those are just as emotional and deep and fun.”
He also adds that its because of the darkness and realism of Arrow that shows like Flash and Supergirl got to be made, even recalling when Arrow himself appeared in the Flash pilot:
“I remember in the pilot to The Flash, Arrow being in the scene and thinking, ‘Is this going ot make both shows feel smaller or bigger?’ And sort of like the comic books, it made them both feel a little bigger.”
