Another Unreleased Nintendo 64 Game Discovered: “Freak Boy”
Earlier this month the prototype for an unreleased Nintendo 64 game, Viewpoint 2064, was finally discovered and footage was posted online. Now, twice in the same month, it’s happened again, this time in the UK. The alpha cart turned up at a flea market in the town of Guileford, and was spotted by an anonymous fan of the website Unseen 64, who recognized the name “Freak Boy” written on the prototype in marker. He immediately purchased it, filmed footage of the game running with his cell, and sent nine little short video clips to Unseen 64. They can all be viewed at this link instead. You can check out some of the footage that was revealed in the player below.
Freak Boy would have been interesting. It comes from the very very early days of 3D game development and would’ve been released within the first year of the N64’s life, a period of time when 3D graphics looked so primitive that people were doing some really wild and avant-garde things with it instead of trying to get as close to “reality” as possible. Many of the environments in Freak Boy look refreshingly weird, to say nothing of the protagonist you’re controlling, whom we still know nothing about.
This looks to be an earlier build of the game. The one video of Freak Boy that existed prior to this appears to be later in development and has a lot more going on.
Freak Boy’s anonymous new owner may put up some longer levels soon. But he did mention the seller had two other prototype carts that he never picked up. One said “Casino,” but the other’s writing was far more interesting: “Mario 2.” I hope somebody managed to rescue that one.
