Agents Of Shield Showrunners Talks Taking Show To Space In Season 05
Agents of Shield has tried very hard to be a kind of show that truly impacts the universe its derived from. And though it stumbled out of the gates, and floundered at times, it has shined at times. Season 04 was a big step forward for the series, as it did “pods” of arcs that culminated in some pretty epic things. With Season 05 though, they really went out there to do something different. They went to the future, and space, and are now back trying to stop the world from being “quaked’ apart.
But, why the jump to the future and space? Well, showrunner Jed Whedon explained that it’s something they’ve wanted to do for a while, and they also had to top all the things they did in Season 04:
“Last year was a real kitchen sink year,” Whedon told CinemaBlend. “We had a lot of stuff going on. We did Alt-World. We did Ghost Rider. We did LMDs [Life Model Decoys]. So we did two different versions of alternate versions of ourselves, and so we were thinking ‘Where can we go that’s different?’”
Fellow showrunner Maurissa Tanchareon noted that they even put a 4th wall breaking line to show that this team really had been through it all:
“Mack’s line sort of reflects what we were thinking in the writer’s room,” Tancharoen added. “He turns to Coulson and goes ‘We’re in space. It’s the one thing we haven’t done yet.’ So it was definitely an area that we had been contemplating for a while.”
It’s unclear whether Agents of Shield will get a Season 06, but the team is prepping it for a proper end in case it doesn’t.
