Budget Biomorphs: The Making of The Guyver Films Review
My passion for The Guyver is very close to that of O’Brien (though it did not drive me to write a book), in that I discovered the first film on the video rental store shelf in the early 90’s and was mesmerized by its unique blend of horror, comedy and choreographed violence. I had never seen anything like it and found myself renting it multiple times to share with friends.

IDW Bringing Its Titles To The Omnibus App
In case you haven’t checked in for a while, ComiXology is dead. The decay has been slow, so this might not surprise everyone, but allowing itself to be bought by Amazon was the biggest mistake it ever made. All ComiXology purchases have now been absorbed into Kindle, which no comics reader wants to use as its interface is buggy and awful for this sort of medium. This, essentially, means we have to start all over. A few new digital comics subscription services have sprung up in ComiXology’s wake, and though none have become dominant yet, the one called Omnibus just got a big lift. IDW announced today its library of titles will be accessible through the Omnibus app, effective immediately. “We are excited to partner with Omnibus and their new digital reading app,” says Tara McCrillis, IDW’s Co-Publisher. “We believe the hole ComiXology is leaving in the market is going to be filled with innovators like the Omnibus team. Our goal is to allow our fans to have access to our content in as many places as possible.” IDW’s comics include Sonic the Hedgehog, Transformers, Star Trek, The Rocketeer, Dungeons & Dragons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (including the smash hit The Last Ronin), and many original stories with non-licensed characters. The deal also includes the titles from Top Shelf, the IDW subsidiary. There are now over 300 IDW comics on Omnibus, which isn’t quite as many as there were on ComiXology, but it’s a work in progress and the company says more will be added in the coming months. The Omnibus app is available on iPad and the web internationally. iPhone and Android versions are coming soon.

The Electric State RPG Launches Kickstarter Campaign
Free League once partnered with illustrator Simon Stålenhag to bring his book Tales From The Loop to life. The tabletop game became one of their biggest sellers, so why not try it again? Free League has announced a new RPG based on a different Stålenhag book, The Electric State. Its crowdfunding campaign launched on Kickstarter today and reached its goal in minutes. Both the book and game The Electric State are set in an alternate, post-apocalyptic 1997. In the storyline, a group of travelers are heading out on a journey through the ruins of America, littered with gigantic battle drones and discarded trash (I’d be more worried about the battle bots than the trash). In the game version, you and your friends will be playing those travelers. The Electric State RPG uses Free League’s Year Zero Engine and was written by Nils Hintze (Tales From the Loop RPG, The Walking Dead Universe RPG) in collaboration with Tomas Härenstam (Blade Runner RPG, Dragonbane, ALIEN RPG), Nils Karlén (Coriolis) and Mattias Johnsson Haake (Symbaroum). Johan Nohr (MÖRK BORG) will be providing graphic design and layouts. The digital edition of The Electric State costs a $24 pledge. The Standard Edition, which includes both physical and digital versions of the rulebook, costs $48. The Collector’s Edition runs $87 and includes a unique design exclusive to the Kickstarter. And today only, anyone who pledges to a tier with physical items in it will receive a free art print of the weird decayed Sonic-looking statue depicted on the book’s cover. Plus, all backers will receive access to the Alpha version of the RPG, to be sent out a few days after the campaign ends. You’ll also be seeing The Electric State on the big screen soon: Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown are set to star in a movie adaption directed by the Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame). But you can be the first among your friends to know what it is through this game. The campaign will remain open for the next 14 days, closing down on December 20. Reserve your copy today!

The GTA VI Trailer Is Here NOW; The Game Won’t Come ‘Til 2025
Rockstar said they’d release the GTA VI trailer tomorrow, December 5. But then a leak happened today and the company was like “screw it, here it is officially.” Behold: for the first time ever, this is what a Grand Theft Auto made with modern technology can look like:

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Debuts Trailer
Those who saw Toho’s latest, Godzilla Minus One, in theaters last weekend got reintroduced to the ORIGINAL radioactive lizard: the one that isn’t your friend; the mindless monster borne of war who has just come to wreck everything. It’s quote an adjustment from this to the Westernized version, but the first trailer for Godzilla and King Kong’s latest buddy picture was also released this weekend. Legendary has an agreement with Toho where neither party is allowed to release their Godzilla movies in the same year. In 2024, Legendary will have custody again, so they’re just getting started promoting it early. (Note that this agreement doesn’t extend to television, which allows Legendary to run a Monsterverse series on Apple TV+.) Godzilla and King Kong once despised each other, but they’ve learned to get along — just in time too. They’re going to need to depend on each other to face a new threat…a nameless (for now) giant gorilla. Friend of Kong’s? Not anymore. Director Adam Wingard, the one behind the previous film Godzilla Vs. Kong, says he couldn’t resist keeping the two titans together for at least one more picture. “It’s too exciting having them in one movie. And now, the next one has to be about the continuation of that relationship, which is going to be the team-up.” But they’ll do more than just fight. “We have some sequences going up to about eight minutes long, where it’s just the monsters doing their thing, and so the movie really allows the monsters to tell their own narrative in a visual, nonverbal way.” Maybe in their downtime we’ll see them catching the game on ESPN or playing video games together or something. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire will premiere in theaters April 12, 2024.

Barbie Lands On Max December 15, With ASL Feature
Warner Bros’ Barbie was undeniably the most popular film of 2023, which is why they’ve kept it in theaters and away from home viewing as long as possible. Bot now that every last box office dime has been counted and stored away, it’s at last time for the streaming debut a lot of people have been impatient for. Barbie arrives on Max in less than two weeks, December 15. Margot Robbie stars as a Barbie in Barbieland who lives a life of plastic perfection until she begins to have unBarbielike thoughts. Feeling something must be wrong with her — or with the girl playing with her motionless counterpart — Barbie makes a trip to the Real World to see what’s up. The resulting cross-pollination causes chaos in both worlds, but especially Barbieland, where Ken attempts to overthrow the Barbies and establish his own horse-themed patriarchy. Greta Gerwig delivers a cunning, sharply satirical story that co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera. Barbie needs the proper accessories, and her Max debut will come with a special one: the film won’t just have subtitles, but an ASL (American Sign Language) option. That means performer Leila Hanaumi will appear onscreen and deliver the dialogue through her hands. A day before the movie is made available, Max will host a special community screening in LA with Robbie and Hanaumi present for a post-screening conversation. The event will be in collaboration with the nonprofits Deaf West Theatre and RespectAbility. “Max is the premiere destination for storytelling, so being able to share the biggest movie of the year in ASL, the first language for many, will make this story resonate in a more meaningful way,” said Casey Bloys, CEO, HBO and Max Content. “By offering sign language interpretation, we will build upon the film’s empowering message of inclusiveness and offer a unique viewing experience for the Deaf community to enjoy with family and friends.” Barbie makes her streaming premiere exclusively on Max December 15.

Wapeach Has Been Revealed!
Waluigi, one of Nintendo’s most meme-able characters, did not make his first “WAH” until 2000, when Nintendo was developing Mario Tennis for the N64 and needed an extra character for Doubles matches. Someone suggested making a Wario equivalent for Luigi and giving him a pun name based on the Japanese word “igiwalui” (loosely translates to “a bad person”). Miyamoto had no involvement beyond final approval, so if he didn’t like it, the world might have never seen Waluigi, but he fortunately loved the concept. The team then asked if they could develop “evil” versions of Peach and Daisy, and Miyamoto just laughed and said “I don’t even want to know what their girlfriends would look like!” That ended that, but it didn’t stop the fanbase from years and years of sketching out what a Wapeach or a Wadaisy would have looked like. But as of today, we have a real answer. Turns out artist Fumihide Aoki, who was working on Mario Power Tennis for Gamecube in 2004, proposed Wapeach again, and this time he had mock-ups for the presentation. Again the proposal was turned down, but he saved his sketches and released them on the Internet today. BEHOLD WAPEACH: Yeah, I know. Compared to the troll-like appearances of Wario and Waluigi, Wapeach seems kind of toned down. In fact it just looks like the regular Peach in a Halloween costume. But she did get far enough in development for a game model to exist: Her colors are purple and yellow, like Wario. In our opinion Wapeach needed a bit more work. The sketch where she has an axe instead of a racket is one promising direction they could have pursued. Would Bowser kidnap Wapeach, or would she kidnap him instead? The answers to such questions will be told only in fanfics.
