id Software and publisher Bethesda have released a trailer for the upcoming Doom game. The CG-rendered trailer is steeped in dark atmosphere and shows off a huge demon traversing the rocky environment.
The developers first announced Doom 4 in 2008 without revealing any other information. However, the game was subject to a number of development problems was scrapped in 2011 with id Software starting over with a new game entitled Doom. Despite the title it is not being made as a reboot but isn’t a direct to Doom 3 either.
A beta for the game came bundled with pre-orders of Wolfenstein: The New Order for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
It is widely expected that more information will be made available at QuakeCon next month. The convention run from July 17 to July 20, id Software and Bethesda often use it to announce new titles.
The series’ first instalment was the 1993 first-person shooter that revolutionized the genre. Despite its horror and gore elements bringing criticism from some quarters, its controversy did little to stem its popularity. The game actually went on to be installed on more machines than Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
The last full game to be released in the series was Doom 3 in 2004. It received a positive critical reception and was commercially successful, spawning an expansion in the form of Resurrection of Evil eight months later.
In 2012 id Software released Doom 3: BFG Edition. The new title included enhanced graphics, several gameplay changes, as well as previously released DLC and a new exclusive set of missions.
Co-founder John Carmack left id Software last year to work on the new virtual reality headset Oculus Rift. This will make the new Doom the first in the series that Carmack has not worked on throughout development, being the lead programmer of the original games.
